Swami Vivekandanda was asked by an American in 1890, it is said, whether women enjoyed status equal to men in India. He is reported to have astonished the Indians in his audience by saying ‘NO’, and then after a pause, 'The women India are accorded a higher status than men.'

Manu-smriti -The Remembered Tradition of Manu -is  also called Manava-dharma-shastra. (“The Dharma Text of Manu”). It is attributed to the legendary first man and lawgiver, Manu. This received text dates from circa 100 ce, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Manu-smriti lays down the Law in the above Stanza, by declaring that the Gods dwell where women are adored and held in high esteem. Ill-treating them will surely chase, the Gods away, leading to all work coming to a standstill, as a Corollary.
