“The thing that makes you exceptional, if you are at all, is inevitably that which must also make you lonely. “
- Lorraine Vivian Hansberry (May 19, 1930 – January 12, 1965)

Lorraine, whom we tragically lost to pancreatic cancer at her prime, was the first black woman to write a play performed on Broadway. Her family had struggled against segregation, challenging a restrictive covenant and eventually provoking the Supreme Court case Hansberry v.Lee. Her best known work, the play ‘A Raisin in the Sun’ highlights the lives of Black Americans, living under racial segregation in Chicago.
Martin Luther King, Jr. paid her this tribute: "Her creative ability and her profound grasp of the deep social issues confronting the world today will remain an inspiration to generations yet unborn."
Reading her quote, knowing her background, one cannot resist the hard-won lesson of Life, she shares with us.  One has to learn to live with himself or herself only for long spells at great deprivation of social life, if one has to achieve something exceptionally great.
