Puranam means the Ancient. Just because something was utttered long long ago, that does not become sanctified and must be obeyed -for example , crossing the seas, disfiguring the widows, practicing untouchability and a host of obsolete practices.
A poem may be in a novel format. Many a contemporary poem is short and sweet and care little for cadence, rhyme, rhythm, lyrics and all that. That does not belittle its intrinsic worth.
The Wise discern. They critically examine the Old & the New impartially and arrive at the right decision on which to adopt and which to abandon. Unlike the Wise, the foolish one depends on the judgement of others.
Literally translated, this Subhashitham says,
“Everything is not good simply because it is old; nor a poem should be condemned simply because it is new; the wise resort to the one or the other after (proper) examination; (only) a fool has his mind led by the judgement of another.”
