An age is called Dark not because the light fails to shine, but because people refuse to see it.

-James Albert Michener, novelist (1907-1997)

James Michener was no ordinary human. As a neonate, he was a ‘left over’and was rescued by his benefactors, who gave him their name. A prolific writer, he contributed to many charities. It is worth our while to explore his enigmatic epigram above.

Ships turn to the lighthouses for safelanding-guidance. Cardinal Newman prayed, “Lead! Kindly Light!’ . Gandhiji adopted it. We seek the inner light also, though we resort to delightful vagaries of vagueness, when asked to share the Bliss. Most of us from different backgrounds pray to the Life-giver in the Sun God. In other words, the inadequate human always craves for the illumination of wisdom. He strives, falters, gains and also loses the Paradise. James Mitchener is of the view that the Light is always there and its shine never gets dull; it is we, who falter and somehow manage to remain in the dark alleys.

The whole of his saying is a metaphor for our missing the wood for the trees and also the trees in the bargain, because of our shortsightedness.
